If your adapter was working prior to going to Windows Update, you may be able to “roll back” to the previous installed driver and all will be well for awhile. Or, you may get no error at all, but your device will not work. If one of these Prolific drivers gets installed to your Windows 64-bit computer then your legacy device will no longer work and will issue the generic “Code 10” error.
Getting a working driver installed by the average user is almost impossible. Unfortunately, it renders hundreds of legacy devices using the earlier chip inoperative. So, Prolific made a new chip and dropped all support for the old one thereby rendering the counterfeit chips unusable. The counterfeit chips use the same Vendor ID (VID_067B) and Product ID (PID_2303) as the authentic Prolific chips. What has happened is that there have been counterfeit “Prolific” chips coming from China. There are many “backyard” fixes out there, but none of them are done properly and if they work it’s just a temporary “Band-Aid” to the problem.
Unfortunately there are hundreds of legacy devices that can no longer be used on newer computers running Windows 7, 8, 8.1, or 10. After all, it’s absolutely great for business. Even the companies selling these USB to Serial adapters and cables appear to be either dumbfounded or have selective amnesia. The Internet is full of web pages discussing this problem, and hardly anyone really seems to understand why it’s happening. “Device driver was not successfully installed” For Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10! Scroll down to the LPT/ COM port then double click Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port Click Driver in the Windows Properties section The driver must be numbered as '2.0.2.8' and dates accordingly If the driver was not installed, remove the Serial adapter then run 'PL2303DriverInstaller.exe' again.
The reason is that Prolific USB/Serial chip 'clones' are often used in generic USB programming cables and the newer Windows drivers actual. I am using a driver version 3.3.2.105 (you do not need to install in compatibility mode). I can confirm that the older drivers do work.
